This was a wait and see race again, as the haze levels in KL remained high. The Race organiser said that with levels under 100, it would go ahead as planned, levels 100-150 would change it to a 5km fun run, and levels over 150 would cancel the race. The levels hovered around 100, but then dipped below and the race was on!I headed over to Cyberjaya in the afternoon to get water and everything we needed for the race as Sandra was heading to the race straight from work.
I was just putting on my watch at 6pm and was about to leave when the storm warning buzzed. Sure enough, I looked outside and the tropical rain was insane! There was lightning directly overhead. Instead of leaving to walk I sat in the hotel reception for a bit and watched while I decided what to do. The organisers had literally just declared the race on and then the storm started!
I realised getting a taxi was not an option when I saw the queue, so I waited it out and walked as soon as the rain died down a bit. Somehow the rain stopping made everything hotter not cooler! When i got to the venue I made sure there was a baggage area, and generally hung out waiting for Sandra. People were excited about running as a lot of us had had races cancelled and had not been able to do much training because of the haze.
The race was generally well organised, and we set off pretty much on time. One part early on was really dark (note to self.......take a torch for ANY race in Malaysia that starts or ends when it is dark!) Luckily the ambulance stayed slow and lit the way for a bit. I was annoyed though as it was impossible to see puddles and holes in the road....I was hoping the whole race was not going to be like this! Luckily, it ended about 1km later and the rest was pretty well lit!
Towards the end I met Siti, who remembered my Half Fanatic tshirt and asked if my friend was also there. I told her yes but my friend was super fast and further ahead! She had seen us at the Asean run. Her own friend was there doing her first ever half so it was cool to chat and hang out for the last part of the race. As with all night races, I struggle as it is late, past my bedtime and I find fuelling much harder. I am sure I always say never again but still find myself there doing them!
The finish line was well run too, firefighters gave us our medals and then we collected the finisher tshirt. We also posed for photos! I didn't really want any food provided, as I had already seen the close proximity of Burger King to the fire station! I was happy that my last half in Malaysia went well!
